A lot of our clients still have questions about duplicate content these days. To clarify, Google states that they do NOT penalize if you have duplicate content (maybe if you really abuse then you can get penalized, but you'd have to be all out).
What does Google do then?
They prefer to show unique results. So. if there are several different webpages on the web that have the same content, Google will do it's best to choose the ORIGINAL version and rank that highly. All the other versions will not be ranked.
So what does this mean for you?
You should post articles to your site first and let them stay there for a week or two. This will, in theory, let Google know you are the originator of the article. Then go ahead and promote the article and let other sites post the article (ask for a link back). If an article is already published somewhere, feel free to post it on your site (if you have permission) without worry of a penalty. Best practice is to give credit to the authoring site and author.

That solved my problem with misunderstandings. Sometimes short is better than long:)
I have a blog, and publish articles on blog first, wait until they get indexed and then publish them in top article directories like ezinearticles.com, isnare.com and goarticles.com
